ARTIST STATEMENT:
The art created is a conglomeration of many ideas and influences stemming from
the known, unknown and the world around me. These are not specific ideas but ideas
and subjects the Avisapiens I create may do, see or explore. These ideas and
influences all converge into a mystical, fantastic and surreal world with
Human-Bird zoomorphic figures at it's center. The “Avisapiens” as i call them are
created from a childhood fascination with birds and the idea of what we would be
like if we had bird attributes as well as our human.
INFLUENCE:
In my past studies I found myself attracted to works created by Max Ernst,
Remedios Varo, Leonra Carrington, Victor Brauner, Arshile Gorky and many different
manuscript illuminations.
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES
These influences and items show up in my work in the use of a variety of media that
help to create the art which allow for expression to the fullest in Oil Paint(Old
Holland,Williamsburg and Windsor Newton-Alkyds), acrylic, watercolor, china marker,
oil stick, silverpoint, graphite, color pencil, pen and ink, sharpie and spray
paint mediums. The techniques I choose are but are not limited to
Collage,Aerography,Fumage, Grattage, Sufflage Frattage,Eclaboussure,Decalcomania,
Drawing, and Painting. Sketches/Drawings are individual narratives but at times are
the beginning of Installation pieces. Installations are compiled of
sketches/drawings,contour cut panels(relief) and sculptural elements.
BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION:
Robert Allen Hoffman
Born: May 3, 1971, Logansport, Indiana.
I was hatched from a blue and speckled egg in the small nest of Logansport,IN.
I grew up in one of the Liberal-Democratic ornithological Families which were rare
in this nest. I was always surrounded by nature and bizarre people so I guess this
helped in my liking of the bizarre, surreal and mysterious. When in High School I
took as many art classes as I could since this is were I felt the most comfortable
and where I excelled the most. After High School I went to a small college in the
southern region of Indiana called Vincennes University, I was accepted into the art
department there but the town was oppressive and sent me into flights of fancy.
When I was done there I decided to take a hiatus and migrate away to the east coast
and ended up landing in a larger nest called Portland ME. It was interesting but
very cold in the winter and I decided that this was not a good nesting place so I
packed my eggs and migrated back to Indiana, even though the winters there were not
any better. When I finally arrived back in Indiana I ended my long migration in W.
Lafayette, IN. I worked at a plumage shop called Amused Clothing. I worked and
collected a few seeds and then eventually migrated again to Fort Wayne, IN. where I
began my education again at St. Francis University and then transfered to Indiana-
Purdue Universities. This is where I received my BFA. After receiving my BFA from
Indiana University I decided I needed a change of mind, space and environment so my
Flock and I decided to move to Baltimore, MD. This is where we have begun our new
nest.
